Back Pressure Check Valves
MGM BACK PRESSURE CHECK VALVES are safety mechanisms. They are to be installed in lines flowing into pressure tanks, as near to the tank as possible. Their purpose is to shut off the flow of fluid from the tank in case of breakage or rupture of any flow line or fitting located on the side of the valve away from the tank.
Back Pressure Check Valves are normally closed valves. They are to be positioned in the tank line or tank fitting so that pressure within the tank will be in the direction with relation to the valve that will close the valve. Any movement of the fluid inwardly toward the tank will force the back pressure valve to open to allow the flow.
When the flow is stopped, or if flow is reversed to flow out of the tank, the valve will close. Since this is a normally closed valve, it has no maximum flow rating. No orifice is needed through the valve head of back pressure check valves and none is provided. Back pressure check valves, rather than excess flow check valves, should be used in all inflowing lines if outward flow never is required through that line.
The Metal Goods Manufacturing Company is listed in U.S. Coast Guard equipment list CG-190.
Nos. 50 and 51 SERIES MGM BACK PRESSURE CHECK VALVES are made entirely of steel and stainless steel. They are machined from solid bar stock and bodies are of one piece, not joined in sections. Valve stem, valve head, and spring are made of stainless steel. Guide and body are made of carbon steel. Body is zinc or cadmium plated. Valves made entirely of stainless steel, monel, or other materials can be furnished. |

No. 143 MGM BACK PRESSURE CHECK VALVES are identical in effective dimensions with valves of comparable size in the Nos. 50 and 51 Series MGM Back Pressure Check Valves, but have been designed to provide an extra female pipe thread in the outlet end. Where this extra thread is not required, either No. 50 or No. 51 should be used, as they are less expensive than No.143.
